How the color by number maker works

  1. Pick a picture from the gallery, or upload a black-and-white PNG or JPG (up to 8 MB).
  2. The maker finds every closed space between the black lines, merges specks too small to color, and puts a number in the middle of each space where it can't touch a line.
  3. Choose 4 to 12 colors. Neighbouring spaces get different colors whenever the count allows; “Shuffle colors” gives a new mix.
  4. Download the PDF on US Letter or A4: page 1 is the numbered puzzle with the color key, page 2 is the colored answer key.

Your upload never leaves your device: the picture is read, numbered and turned into a PDF inside your browser, with nothing sent to our server.

What pictures work best?

  • Clean black outlines on white paper — coloring pages, simple drawings, scanned or photographed sketches with good light.
  • Closed shapes: a gap in a line lets two spaces run into one.
  • Between about 10 and 60 spaces for kids; up to 120 spaces is possible for older kids and adults.
  • Photos don't work directly. Turn a photo into line art first with the photo to coloring page tool, then upload the result here.

If a picture has fewer than 4 spaces or more than 120, the maker tells you instead of making a sheet that is too dull or too crowded to read.

Make your own blank color by number templates

Teachers use the maker to turn a class drawing, a mascot or a seasonal picture into a color by number in a minute. Draw big shapes with a thick black marker, take a photo straight from above in daylight, crop it and upload it. Same picture, same color count and same color mix always give the same sheet, so every student gets an identical copy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the color by number maker free?

Yes. Make and download as many color by number PDFs as you like, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Is my picture uploaded anywhere?

No. Your picture is processed inside your browser and the PDF is built on your device; it is never sent to our server.

Can I turn a photo into a color by number?

Not directly — a photo has no outlines to number. Use the photo to coloring page tool to turn it into line art first, then upload that line art here.

Why does it say my picture has too many spaces?

Above 120 spaces the numbers get too small to read. Pick a simpler picture with bigger shapes, or redraw it with thicker lines.

How many colors should I choose?

4–6 colors for preschool and kindergarten, 8–12 for older kids and adults. The color key at the bottom of the page lists every number and its color.
