How do you turn a photo into a coloring page?
Upload a JPG or PNG, choose how much detail you want, and the tool converts the photo into black outlines on a white background. The free converter runs entirely in your browser, so the picture never leaves your device, and it offers three detail levels. The AI version redraws the photo as a clean coloring page in a simple cartoon, detailed or sketch style, with closed lines and no gray shading. It takes about 10 to 30 seconds and costs 1 credit. Download the result as a PNG or a PDF, print it on letter or A4 paper, and start coloring. Portraits with a clear subject and simple background work best, because fewer busy areas means fewer tiny shapes to color in. If the first result is too busy, run it again at a lower detail level.
- Free converter: runs in your browser, three detail levels
- AI version: 1 credit per photo, about 10–30 seconds, new accounts get 3 free credits
- Output: pure black lines on white, 2400 px (print-ready at 8 inches), PNG and PDF
- AI photos are sent once to the image model and never stored or used for training
How to turn a photo into a coloring page
Pick a photo
Choose a clear picture with one main subject, such as a portrait, a pet or a building. Good light and a simple background give the cleanest lines.
Choose free or AI
Use the free converter for a quick sketch, or switch to AI for cleaner outlines. For AI, pick Simple cartoon, Detailed or Sketch lines.
Set the detail
Select low, medium or high detail and decide whether to keep or remove the background. Low detail suits young kids; high detail suits adults.
Preview and download
Check the preview, then download a PNG or PDF. If the result is too busy, lower the detail and run it again.
Print at 100% scale on letter or A4 paper. Cardstock holds up better if your child likes to press hard with markers.
Two ways to make a coloring page from a photo
The free converter traces the edges in your photo and turns them into line art. It runs in your browser, which means the picture is never uploaded anywhere. The result looks like a pencil sketch, and it is a good choice for landscapes, buildings and anything with strong outlines.
The AI version works differently. It looks at the photo and redraws it as a real coloring page, with thick, closed outlines and large areas that are easy to fill in. That is why it handles faces, pets and busy scenes better than edge tracing does.
| Free converter | AI version | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | 1 credit per photo |
| Where it runs | Your browser | Image model, photo sent once, not stored |
| Styles | Three detail levels | Simple cartoon, Detailed, Sketch lines |
| Line quality | Sketch-like, may have gaps | Clean, closed, no gray shading |
| Speed | Instant | About 10–30 seconds |
Which photos work best
A little planning before you upload saves a lot of retries. These habits make the biggest difference:
- One clear subject. A single child, pet or object turns into a better page than a crowded group shot.
- Even light. Harsh shadows turn into black blotches on the page.
- A plain background, or use the remove-background option so the subject stands alone.
- Close framing. Faces and animals should fill most of the frame.
If a result looks too busy, run it again at a lower detail level. If it looks too sparse for an older child, go up one level.
Printing tips
Pages are exported at 2400 px, which prints sharply at 8 inches wide. The PDF option adds 0.5-inch margins so nothing is clipped by the printer.
- Print at 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page, to keep the margins.
- Use plain printer paper for crayons and colored pencils.
- Use 65 lb cardstock for markers and watercolor pencils so ink does not bleed through.
- Print in black and white or grayscale to save color ink.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Lines look broken: use the AI version, or pick a photo with stronger contrast between the subject and the background.
- Too many tiny shapes: lower the detail level or remove the background.
- Face looks flat: choose Detailed style and keep the photo close and well lit.
- Photo will not upload: JPG and PNG work best, and the file should be under 15 MB.
Because the free converter is instant, it is worth trying two or three settings on the same photo before spending any credits.
Ideas for parents, teachers and parties
For parents
Turn a school photo into a page your child can color and give to grandparents. Pet portraits and family trips make keepsakes that actually get used.
For teachers
Make a page from a class field trip photo, or a landmark for a geography lesson. Remove the background to keep the focus on the subject.
For birthday parties
Print the guest of honor on a page for each table, or collect a dozen pages into a party favor with the coloring book maker.
Your photos and your privacy
The free converter never uploads your photo. With AI, the photo is sent once to the image model to create your page, we do not store it, and it is never used for training. Signed-in users can find their results in My creations for 30 days. This tool is for parents, teachers and adults, and is not directed to children under 13.
Good photos to try first
If you are not sure where to start, these subjects tend to give the most satisfying pages:
- A pet looking at the camera, with a plain floor or wall behind it.
- A child at a birthday party or on a playground, framed from the waist up.
- A house, a landmark or a bridge for a calm, detailed page for adults.
- A favorite stuffed animal, which makes a simple page for toddlers.
Group photos work too, but each person becomes a small shape. If you want everyone to be colorable, crop to two or three faces.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn a picture into a coloring page for free?
Yes. The free converter turns a photo into line art in your browser with three detail levels and no sign-up. AI conversion is optional and uses credits.
Is my photo uploaded or stored?
Not with the free converter, which runs on your device. With AI, the photo is sent once to the image model, is not stored by us and is never used for training.
How long does the AI version take?
Usually 10 to 30 seconds per photo. If a generation fails, your credit is refunded automatically.
What file formats can I download?
PNG and PDF. PDFs come in US Letter or A4 with 0.5-inch margins, and PNGs are 2400 px for a sharp print at 8 inches.
Why does my photo look too busy or too empty?
Change the detail level. Lower detail gives fewer, bigger shapes for young children. Higher detail keeps more texture for older kids and adults.
Can I use photos of other people’s children?
Only with permission from a parent or guardian. Please upload only photos you have the right to use.
