Tips for practicing sight words

  • Do one page (four words) a day — little and often works best.
  • Read the word aloud before and after tracing it.
  • Find the word in a picture book after practicing it.
  • Turn finished pages into flash cards by cutting out the dark example word.

What are sight words?

High-frequency words children learn to recognise instantly, many of which can't be sounded out easily (said, the, where). The Dolch lists were compiled from the most common words in children's books.
