Games to play with ABC cards
- Letter hunt: hide five cards around the room; say the letter and its sound when you find one.
- Alphabet line: put all 26 cards in order on the floor, then take one away and guess which is missing.
- Sound sort: sort the cards into letters that are in your name and letters that are not.
- Memory: print two sets and play a matching game face down (start with 6–8 pairs).
- Word builder: use the cards as a spelling model for the word on each card.
Printing tips
Print on cardstock so the cards last, or laminate them. Six cards per page makes pocket-size flash cards; four per page gives bigger cards for circle time and word walls. The x card uses “fox”, because very few simple words start with x — it is a good way to talk about the /ks/ sound at the end of a word.
Next steps: alphabet tracing worksheets, sight words for kindergarten and handwriting paper.
