Times tables test

Pick the tables, the number of questions and a timer, then answer on the keypad or your keyboard. Instant marking, a list of mistakes to practise and a printable certificate — free, no login.

In short: A free online times tables quiz for tables 1 to 12. Choose which tables to test, 10, 20, 50 or 100 questions, a time limit (none, 1, 3 or 5 minutes, or 6 seconds per question), mixed or in order, and add division facts if you like. Each answer is marked straight away; at the end you get the score, time, accuracy for every table, the facts you missed with the right answers and a one-click practice round for just those. Personal bests are kept in this browser, and you can print the same test as a worksheet with an answer key, or a certificate with your child's name.

How to use the times tables test at home

  1. Start with the tables your child is learning this week — two or three at a time — and 10 or 20 questions with no time limit.
  2. When the score is 90% or more, add a timer: 3 minutes for 20 questions, then 1 minute.
  3. After each test press Practice my mistakes. It asks only the facts that were missed, so short sessions target the gaps.
  4. Beat the personal best: it is saved for each set of tables in this browser, so the same set can be tried again tomorrow.
  5. Print the certificate when a set is mastered and stick it on the fridge.

How to use it in class

  • Weekly fluency check: everyone takes the same test on tablets or Chromebooks. Copy the page link after choosing settings — it contains the set number, so every student gets identical questions.
  • No devices? Print the test sheet for the same settings; the answer key follows on the next page.
  • Morning work or early finishers: 10 mixed questions on the class board, students answer on whiteboards, one child types on the keypad.
  • Use the score report to note which tables each student still needs, then send home the matching worksheet.

Tips for learning the times tables

  • Learn in this order: 10, 2, 5, then 3, 4 and 11, then 6, 9, 8, 7 and 12.
  • Every fact has a twin: 3 × 8 = 8 × 3. Knowing that halves the job — there are only 78 different facts in the 12 × 12 chart.
  • Use tricks: the 9s digits add up to 9 (9 × 7 = 63, 6 + 3 = 9); the 4s are double the 2s; the 8s are double the 4s.
  • Short and often beats long and rare: 5 minutes a day works better than 30 minutes once a week.
  • Aim for an answer in about 3 seconds. Below that, the fact is memorised rather than worked out.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my child on times tables online for free?

Choose the tables and the number of questions above and press Start. Your child types the answers on the big keypad (or a keyboard); each answer is marked straight away and the results show the score, the time and every mistake. No login or app is needed.

How fast should kids know their times tables?

A common goal is about 3 seconds per fact, which is 20 questions in about a minute. Many UK schools check all tables to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4 with 6 seconds per question — use the 6 s per question timer to practise exactly that.

Is this like the Year 4 multiplication tables check?

It is similar in format: 25 mixed questions from the 2–12 tables with 6 seconds each. Choose tables 2–12, 20 or 50 questions and the 6 s per question timer. It is a practice tool, not the official check.

Can I include division facts?

Yes. Choose × and ÷ to mix multiplication and division, or Division for division only. Division questions are the inverse of the chosen tables, for example 56 ÷ 8 = 7, and always have whole-number answers.

Does it repeat the same questions?

In mixed order, no fact is asked twice until every fact in the chosen tables has come up once. With 3 tables of multiplication there are 36 facts, so a 50-question test goes through all 36 before repeating any.

Where are the scores saved?

The personal best for each set of tables is saved in this browser only (localStorage). Nothing is sent to a server, and clearing browser data removes it.

Can I print the test or a certificate?

Yes. Test sheet + answer key makes a PDF of the same questions with an answer key. After a test, type your child's name to download a certificate or a score report with every mistake.
