How to read a multiplication chart

Find the first number in the left column and the second number in the top row. The answer is where the row and the column meet — for example, row 7 and column 8 meet at 56.

The shaded diagonal shows the square numbers (1, 4, 9 … 144). The chart is symmetrical across that diagonal because 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 are the same.

Tips for learning the times tables

  • Start with ×1, ×2, ×5 and ×10 — they follow simple patterns.
  • Learn the square numbers next; they anchor the rest of the chart.
  • Use the commutative rule: if you know 3 × 8 you also know 8 × 3, so there are only 78 facts to learn, not 144.
  • Cover a row with a strip of paper and say the answers before you reveal them.
