How do I choose a tattoo font?
Start with the two families most tattoo lettering comes from: script (flowing, connected, romantic) and blackletter or gothic (bold, angular, traditional). Type your words here to compare them side by side, along with bold cursive and double-struck outline styles. Copy-paste characters are only a preview: your artist will draw the final lettering by hand, adjusting spacing and adding flourishes. To judge real size, print your words from the print section as big gothic or calligraphy outlines on Letter or A4, cut them out and hold them against your skin. Thin script needs room; small text spreads over the years, so most artists suggest letters at least a quarter of an inch tall. Bring the printout and a few references to your consultation.

Script or gothic?
| Script | Gothic (blackletter) | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, personal, elegant | Bold, traditional, strong |
| Good for | Names, quotes, dates | Single words, surnames, across the back or chest |
| Small sizes | Needs space between loops | Holds up well when bold |
Check spelling twice
Fancy characters make typos harder to spot. Read your words in the plain text box before you copy, and ask a friend to check names and dates in another language.
Where can you paste fancy fonts?
These are not real fonts. Each letter is swapped for a Unicode character that already looks styled, so the result is plain text that pastes into almost any app. Whether a style shows up depends on the fonts installed on the phone or computer that reads it:
| Place | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Instagram bio, captions, comments | Most styles. Names allow them too, but they are harder to search for |
| TikTok bio and captions | Most styles; the username field accepts plain letters only |
| Discord messages, nicknames, server names | Most styles; combining lines (strikethrough, underline) can stack oddly |
| X, Facebook, Threads, YouTube comments | Most styles |
| Text messages and email | Depends on the receiving phone; older Android phones may show boxes |
| Usernames, passwords, school portals | Usually blocked or turned back into plain letters |
If a friend sees empty boxes (□) or question marks, their device has no glyph for that character. Script, bold, italic, gothic and bubble styles are the safest; look-alike “weird” styles and stacked marks are the most likely to break.
Use fancy text kindly
Screen readers read many of these characters one by one (“mathematical bold script capital H…”) or skip them, and search boxes rarely match them. Keep fancy text for a name, a heading or a few words, and write the important part (dates, links, how to reach you) in plain letters.
Frequently asked questions
Can I give this text to my tattoo artist?
Use it as a reference. Artists draw lettering by hand to fit your body, so bring the printed page or a screenshot of the styles you like.
Which tattoo fonts are most popular?
Flowing script for names and quotes, and blackletter (gothic) for single bold words. Both are at the top of this page.
How big should tattoo letters be?
Most artists suggest at least about a quarter inch (6 mm) tall for clean lines that age well. Print the outlines to test the size.
Why do some letters show up as boxes?
The app or phone reading your text has no font with that character. Your text is fine; it just cannot be drawn there. Pick a script, bold or bubble style, which almost every device supports.
Is this font generator free?
Yes. Every style, the copy button and the printable PDFs are free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The text is converted in your browser and is never sent to us.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. Type your text, tap Copy next to the style you like, then long-press in Instagram, TikTok or Discord and paste.
