How to solve them

  1. Rectangle: area = length × width.
  2. L-shape: split it into two rectangles with one line, find each area and add them.
  3. Or take the big rectangle around it and subtract the missing corner.
  4. Write the answer in square units (cm², ft², …).

Area vs. perimeter

Area counts the squares inside a shape; perimeter measures the distance around it. Because every shape on these sheets is drawn to scale with all sides labelled, you can also ask students to find the perimeter for extra practice.

Charts that help

More math generators: multiplication, long division, comparing fractions, multiplying fractions, adding fractions, least common multiple (lcm), greatest common factor (gcf), place value, addition, subtraction, combining like terms. Or print a whole grade: 4th, 5th and 6th grade math.

Frequently asked questions

Are the shapes drawn to scale?

Yes. Each shape is drawn in proportion to its side lengths, so longer sides really are longer on the page.

Why are there two ways to find the area of an L-shape?

You can split it into two rectangles and add, or subtract the cut-out corner from the full rectangle. Both give the same answer, which makes a good self-check.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The PDF always ends with an answer key for the same problems, so you can print the questions for students and keep the key. Every answer is checked by automated tests.

Can I print the same worksheet again later?

Yes. Every sheet has a set number (the seed) printed in the footer and saved in the page address. Open the same link, or type the same level, count and set number, and you get exactly the same problems and answer key.
