How to solve them

  1. Read the places from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands …
  2. A digit's value is the digit times its place: the 4 in 3,482 is worth 400.
  3. Expanded form adds up the value of every non-zero digit: 3,482 = 3,000 + 400 + 80 + 2.

Make it hands-on

  • Write each number in the place value chart before answering.
  • Build the number with base-ten blocks or play money.
  • Read the number aloud — the words follow the place value (three thousand, four hundred eighty-two).

Frequently asked questions

What is expanded form?

A number written as the sum of the values of its digits, such as 5,307 = 5,000 + 300 + 7. Zero digits are left out.

Do the hard sheets include decimals?

Yes — about half the hard problems have two decimal places, so students meet tenths and hundredths (the 7 in 12.07 is worth 0.07).

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The PDF always ends with an answer key for the same problems, so you can print the questions for students and keep the key. Every answer is checked by automated tests.

Can I print the same worksheet again later?

Yes. Every sheet has a set number (the seed) printed in the footer and saved in the page address. Open the same link, or type the same level, count and set number, and you get exactly the same problems and answer key.
