A shortcut: cancel first

Before multiplying, look for a numerator and a denominator that share a factor. In 4/9 × 3/8, divide 4 and 8 by 4 and 3 and 9 by 3: the problem becomes 1/3 × 1/2 = 1/6, with no simplifying at the end.

Frequently asked questions

Are the answers simplified?

Yes. Every answer is in lowest terms, with improper results written as mixed numbers (for example 2 1/4) and whole-number results written as whole numbers.

How do you multiply a whole number by a fraction?

Write the whole number over 1 and multiply as usual: 3 × 2/5 = 3/1 × 2/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The PDF always ends with an answer key for the same problems, so you can print the questions for students and keep the key. Every answer is checked by automated tests.

Can I print the same worksheet again later?

Yes. Every sheet has a set number (the seed) printed in the footer and saved in the page address. Open the same link, or type the same level, count and set number, and you get exactly the same problems and answer key.
