Comparing fractions worksheets

Two fractions, one box: students write <, > or =. Fractions are printed stacked (numerator over denominator), just like in a textbook.

How to solve them

  1. Same denominator: the bigger numerator is the bigger fraction.
  2. Same numerator: the smaller denominator is the bigger fraction (bigger pieces).
  3. Different denominators: cross-multiply. For 2/3 and 3/5, compare 2 × 5 = 10 with 3 × 3 = 9, so 2/3 > 3/5.

Ways to compare fractions

  • Use the fraction wall: the longer bar is the bigger fraction.
  • Compare with 1/2: 3/8 is less than a half, 5/9 is more, so 3/8 < 5/9.
  • Find a common denominator and compare the numerators.
  • Cross-multiply as a quick check.

Frequently asked questions

Do the sheets include equal fractions?

Yes, on medium and hard levels some pairs are equivalent (like 2/3 and 6/9), so students have to use = as well as < and >.

Are the fractions in simplest form?

Not always — comparing 4/8 with 1/2 is part of the practice.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The PDF always ends with an answer key for the same problems, so you can print the questions for students and keep the key. Every answer is checked by automated tests.

Can I print the same worksheet again later?

Yes. Every sheet has a set number (the seed) printed in the footer and saved in the page address. Open the same link, or type the same level, count and set number, and you get exactly the same problems and answer key.
